Email-to-SMS Gateway Deprecation

IMPORTANT: After 7/31/2024, Twilio will take account actions against customers using email-to-SMS gateways.

Starting July 31, 2024, Twilio will actively enforce our Acceptable Use Policy and Twilio SendGrid email policy which prohibits using carrier-provided or other email-to-SMS gateways for commercial use. After that date, emails sent to an SMS gateway from Twilio SendGrid will not be delivered. You will be charged for failed emails sent to gateways.

Using SendGrid to send emails to email-to-SMS gateways to deliver commercial messages is against Twilio’s Acceptable Use Policies as well as Twilio SendGrid’s Email Policy.

Carriers do not sanction sending emails to email-to-SMS gateways for commercial communications. Many countries, territories, jurisdictions, and industry agreements disallow solicited or unsolicited email-to-SMS sends (including the CAN-SPAM Act in the United States). These restrictions extend to the carrier-provided gateways in this linked list, along with gateways built by third parties or gateways you build to switch channels.

Email and text messaging regulations, laws, and industry rules vary by country and jurisdiction. Email and messaging campaigns and applications must be separate and follow their own rules per channel.

Can I still maintain Email and Text Messaging Campaigns?

Yes. While gateways that forward traffic between the email and text message are prohibited, you can – and are encouraged to – have unique campaigns for email and text messaging traffic in countries where they are supported. Our country-specific SMS guidelines and service and country-specific terms and requirements detail these differences.

We will periodically update this Changelog entry for changes in product terms and Twilio’s Acceptable Use Policy.

We currently use an email-to-SMS Gateway for some of our campaigns. How can I get started with messaging campaigns?

If you don’t yet have a messaging provider, we’re happy to help!
