Beyond Email Delivery: My First 30 Days at SendGrid Jillian Wohlfarth February 25, 2013 Company // SUMMARIES ?> I joined the SendGrid team just over a month ago as the newest addition to the Inbound Marketing team in the Denver office. In just my first 30 days at the company, I’ve gone on a company sponsored trip to Mexico, met all of our top executives, attended information sessions about each department in the company, and been feted with tons of free food (Chipotle is our company cafeteria…seriously!). I’d always heard that SendGrid has a great work culture, but I had to see it to believe it. 30 days in, I’m happy to report that it’s definitely all true. I see the 4H’s that serve as our company’s cultural foundation (Honesty, Hunger, Humility, and Happiness) in practice here everyday. The company’s honesty is showcased in our Thursday “all-hands” meetings—every office (from NYC to Romania) reports on their successes, struggles, and future plans via video chat. It’s a really transparent meeting that allows us all to get aligned on our current initiatives. It’s also a great time to see the smiling faces of all of our SendGrid employees from around the globe! We also use this time to give kudos to our (humble) fellow employees and to welcome new ones to the team. Hunger (in both the literal and figurative sense) is constantly on display inside and outside the office. From a literal standpoint, SendGrid is very serious about making sure that its employees are well fed. That means that every office has a fully stocked kitchen, free cookie Tuesdays, lunch credits at neighboring restaurants, and free catered meals on Friday. My favorite lunch memory so far is when our awesome Events Marketing Coordinator, Nicole, catered in hot wings for us to have our very own SendGrid WingBowl 2013 in the Denver office. Though we all chickened out from actually participating, I think it’s safe to say that we all consumed more than our fair share of wings that day. Way to go Denver! But, hunger also shows itself in different ways: from the handful of employees pursuing graduate degrees outside of work, to those seeking personal and professional development at conferences and seminars, to our numerous CrossFit coaches inspiring their students every day, to those who are making a difference by volunteering their time to charity. This past month I’ve seen that SendGrid’s employees’ goals are big, but their hearts are bigger. And where do I even start when I talk about happiness? The in-office ping pong tables and nerf gun fights, the company kickball and Tough Mudder teams, or the after work happy hours? The list goes on and on, but I think the best way to explain how happy and proud SendGridders are, is by looking around any of our offices and seeing that on any given day, at least half of our employees are wearing SendGrid gear. Happiness personified. I’m proud to be part of such a generous company that invests in its employees’ happiness and personal development. I’m surrounded by extremely smart, motivated, and energetic co-workers who enjoy what they do. All of this wouldn’t be possible without the ingenuity, humility, and support of SendGrid’s founders, Isaac Saldana, Tim Jenkins, and Jose Lopez and of our Exec team led by our CEO Jim Franklin. They all instilled such pride in us during our kickoff in Mexico and I know we’re all really excited to make big strides in 2013 and beyond. There is lots in store for SendGrid in the year ahead.
