One Rural Town’s Portrait of U.S. Immigration:
Pelican Rapids, Minnesota
Pelican Rapids, MN--Ever since moving to the United States from Mexico in 1999, Carlo and Carmen Rodriguez have dreamed of opening their own business on U.S. soil. Today they are the proud owners of Abarrotes Mejia, a Mexican grocery and specialty store which occupies a formerly vacant storefront in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, a small community of 2,500 people in West Central Minnesota.
Theirs is one of several immigrant owned businesses in Pelican Rapids, just one of the countless numbers of businesses across the country that have given local communities a much needed shot in the arm. While many people living in farming communities have long recognized the important role that immigrant populations play in filling the labor requirements of American agriculture, often overlooked is the role these immigrants are playing in revitalizing rural communities across the country.

CA Participates in
National Immigration Summit
Fresno, California (Feb, 20, 2013) Communicating for America (CA) just last week participated in a special conference aimed at offering solutions to America’s broken immigration system. The conference was sponsored by ImmigrationWorks USA, a national federation of employers working to advance better immigration law. CA joined growers, other trade associations, state agriculture officials and congressional staffers in a discussion around designing a better agricultural temporary worker program.
CA also met with both US House and Senate Congressional offices working on immigration issues and was asked to provide testimony and position papers on immigration and agriculture issues.
With CA’s 40 plus years of experience advocating on behalf of American agriculture, along with the CA Education Programs’ (CAEP) expertise in international agriculture training programs, CA is able to offer a unique perspective on this complex issue. “Immigration reform is critical to the American economy and American agriculture as producers across the nation continue to struggle finding the workers they need to successfully run their farms and feed our country,” said CA VP of Government Relations Ben Schierer. “All of our CAEP hosts, CA members, and quite frankly all Americans are affected by this issue. Whether they are directly affected as a grower or indirectly affected as consumers, we remain committed to finding a workable solution that provides the necessary securities while at the same time providing the labor force that our agricultural businesses need to successfully contribute to the US economy.”
