SendGrid was founded in 2009, and had rapid success. The Boulder startup, which sends e-mails on behalf of companies such as FourSquare, announced in January that it raised $21 million in funding and entered into a partnership with Microsoft, spokeswoman Carly Brantz said.

SendGrid has raised $21 million in a Series B round of funding led by Bessemer Venture Partners. The Boulder, Colo.-based company sends 2.6 billion personalized emails per month to users of services like Pinterest, Airbnb and Path — with 26 billion total emails sent over the past two-and-a-half years.

All those email messages from web applications and services for notifications, updates and subscriptions are growing at a fast clip, and that’s helping to spawn new opportunities in so-called transactional email. SendGrid, a TechStars graduate, is a big beneficiary, becoming one of the largest email platforms in the world, with 40,000 customers and 2.6 billion emails sent a month.

SendGrid CEO Jim Franklin SendGrid, a TechStars company, has raised a $21 million Series B round from Bessemer Venture Partners. Existing investors Foundry Group, Highway 12 Ventures, SoftTechVC, 500 Startups and Bullet Time Ventures also participated.

E-mail infrastructure startup SendGrid has raised $21 million in its second round of funding and created a partnership with Microsoft’s Windows Azure platform to convince more enterprises to use its e-mail delivery solutions, the company announced today.

SendGrid now sends 2.6 billion emails per month for customers in more than 150 countries and tracks and reports more than 400 million events per day. In total, SendGrid has sent 26 billion emails on behalf of clients. The company nearly tripled its customer base (to 40,000) in 2011 alone.

Web host Rackspace Hosting (www.rackspace.com) announced on Thursday that it has partnered with email infrastructure provider SendGrid (www.sendgrid.com).
According to the press release, the partnership will enable Rackspace customers to use SendGrid’s email solution, ideal for large amounts of email.
