Why Postini is Moving to the Google Graveyard

gravestonePostini is (or was) a product that provided email security, instant messaging security, and email archiving services founded in 1999. By 2005 Postini processed over 2.5 billion email messages on a weekly basis and provided anti-spam services for over 4,200 companies.

Acquired by Google in 2007 for $625 million dollars to support the Google Apps platform, Postini is now dying a slow, but inevitable death. With more and more businesses moving to the cloud and Google Apps expanding into the enterprise, Postini has waned in value and was scheduled to be phased out in 2013. So is Postini officially dead?

Postini is on life support, and the plug will soon get pulled. Google stated that transitions would take place throughout 2013 and that customers would be notified 60-90 days in advance with information on how to make the transition to Google Apps. Transitions were scheduled from December 15, 2013 through this week--January 13, 2014.

Postini vs. Google Apps

If you don't like change, don't worry--with Google Apps you’ll have many of the same features you had with Postini including spam reporting, virus blocking, administration controls surrounding privileges, blocked senders, spam settings, content filters and policies, and more. Google Apps also comes with quite a few improvements over Postini, including:
  • Better email protection and filtering: Add larger numbers of approved and blocked senders, get improved spoofing protection with DKIM signing, benefit from better attachment filtering, and now spam will be held for 30 days as opposed to 14, giving you greater control over your inboxes.
  • Better email delivery and routing: Restrict delivery to specific domains, utilize custom routing based on message attributes, and gain advanced filtering options that allow you to reroute messages or send to additional recipients.
  • Better email management: Automatically set policies, create multiple HTML footers based on filters, get an administrative interface available in 28 languages, and benefit from the feature rich capabilities of Google Apps and the Google Apps Marketplace.
Some Postini features will no longer be available such as:
  • Email proxy
  • Wireless settings
  • Spooling
  • Password configuration policies
  • Blatant spam controls
