I’m a developer. I try to be an active member of the developer community, in Brazil and the surrounding region. I wrote a Latin America year in review about the unique opportunities and challenges in my community. There aren’t as many developer events here and we need to change that. Much of my role at SendGrid is finding out what communities need to grow, and helping them with that, or co-organizing and starting events.
Here are a few recent and upcoming events that I’ve had a hand in:
Some of the topics discussed:
- How do I organize my first meetup?
- How do I find people to attend?
- How do I find speakers?
- How do I find a place to do it?
- How do I get projectors?
- How do I find sponsors?
- What’s the best day of the week? What about time?
- What are alternative ways to throw a meetup? Outdoors? College? Companies?
Turns out, all the questions could be answered by one person or another. And if that was not the case, everyone’s shared connections would certainly be able to help.
We have a Google Group, and everyone is invited to join. Be warned it’s Brazil-focused and in Portuguese. We are doing a bi-monthly meetup as well, so we can all keep in touch and scheme about world domination. I’d love to have a global directory with groups in all countries and cities, but still haven’t figured out the best way to do it. If you have any ideas, please reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org or heitortsergent in any social network. Even Snapchat.
I’d like to see more of that information sharing, so we can all help build a stronger, more open, and organized community.
Why don’t you start something?
