As part of our initiative to bring “SendGrid Everywhere,” we recently traveled across the pond on the first ever international leg of our SendGrid Delivered Tour. SendGrid Delivered is our tour about all things email—from deliverability, to ISP trends, to APIs—we cover it all. Over the past year, we’ve been lucky enough to take our tour through some major start-up hubs across the US including, NYC, San Francisco, Denver, Boston, Austin, and Seattle.
After a successful initial run stateside, we thought we’d pack our bags and make a visit to our email hungry friends in Europe. Our stops? London, Berlin, and Paris. This was a particularly special trip for me since I had never visited any of these cities before. I couldn’t imagine a better way to connect with our customers and prospects than in their hometowns with this tour.
I was joined by a handful of my fellow SendGridders who were all ready to help spread the good word about email best practices. They were:

We were especially excited to have our London-based Developer Evangelist, Martyn with us for the entire European tour. He really showed us the ropes and it was wonderful to see him in his element. Martyn is a frequent conference panelist and speaker and is also the central coordinator for Music Hack Day as well as the organizer for the London and Cannes Music Hack Days, so it was great to have him impart his wisdom during our API and technical discussions.
Like our stateside tour, our tour agenda was tailored to both marketers and developers. Our Developer Track included an API workshop and a technical breakdown of SendGrid, hosted by Martyn. The non-technical track covered how to manage your SendGrid account and Brian and I covered tips on how to incorporate marketing messaging into your transactional email. Both groups participated in larger discussions about the state of email today (with a focus on European email trends) and how to navigate the ever-changing ISP landscape. We also walked through the ins and outs of our email service and Ken and Andrei discussed SendGrid’s “follow the sun” support method that ensures that regardless of the time of day (or time zone!) alert and knowledgeable experts are always available to help our customers.
The first stop of our tour was London. There was so much to see! Fortunately, we were able to cover some serious ground by taking a double decker bus tour that took us to see the London Eye, the Tower of London, and Buckingham Palace. We hosted our first event at Microsoft’s Modern Jago pop-up event space. We were thrilled that we could experience the space before it ended its 7-month stint earlier this month and are really appreciative to our partner, Microsoft for offering us such an awesome space.
After London, we traveled to Berlin where we took the city by storm on a personal segway tour (yes, we were “those people” on segways with helmets!) and a stop at one of the city’s best-known beer gardens. After that we were excited for our event at co-working space, Ahoy Berlin. This space was definitely one of the most unique that we’ve presented at thus far. The nautical theme was really inspired and set a refreshing backdrop for the presentations that day.
We were honored to have one of our customers, Booking.com—the world leader in booking accommodations online—join us a presenter. (Maybe you’ve seen their hysterical Super Bowl commercial?) Thomas Howard and Fabrizio Salzano from Booking.com walked us through their service and how they use email. They were a wonderful addition to our tour and helped us say “Auf Wiedersehen!” to Berlin.
For our last stop we said “Bonjour!” to the City of Light, Paris. What a truly charming city to end our trip. Again, our partner Microsoft was a big help—their colorful Microsoft Technology Center provided the perfect setting for our final event. We were also fortunate to have our good friend Rob Spectre from Twilio join Martyn for our API discussion. Très magnifique! We bid our final “adieu” to SendGrid Delivered International and to Paris with a picnic dinner outside of the Eiffel Tower watching it light up and sparkle. What a magical end to an incredible trip!
We are all so grateful to SendGrid for allowing us to absorb the sights and sounds of these three incredible cities. It was wonderful to visit with our European customers and to learn more about what their email needs are. It was a great bonding experience for all of us and I, in particular, can’t wait to go back to all of these cities now that I’ve gotten a taste!
We’re taking everything we learned from this trip and incorporating it into our new SendGrid Delivered tour dates in the US starting this fall.
